Harrington College of Design Students Honored in Southern Accents Magazine Contest
Rebecca Otto, of Plainfield, and R.J. Reynertson of Chicago, seniors at Harrington College of Design, took first-runner up for their kitchen design in the “Last Designer Standing” rendering competition, jointly sponsored by Southern Accents magazine, ASID (American Society of Interior Design) and KitchenAid.
The design competition called for junior or senior level ASID student members to design a kitchen using a 15´x 20´ rectangular floor plan. The design had to include at least three KitchenAid appliances and incorporate a living and/or dining area. Door and window placements were left up to the designers. Otto and Reynertson´s design includes detailed moldings and trim on the cabinetry, windows and doors. All pieces serve multiple purposes for a busy family with children. The design also incorporates plenty of storage, a “drop zone” for kid´s coats, shoes and backpacks, and a separate microwave and refrigerator for after-school snacks.
The entries were evaluated by a representative from each of the three sponsoring organizations who judged on functionality, utility, originality, skillful execution and comfort. The top designs, including that of Otto and Reynertson, will be featured in the November/December 2005 issue of Southern Accents, as well as the Winter 2006 issue of ASID ICON.
“We´re tremendously proud of our students for entering such a high level competition,” says Constantine Vasilios, an interior design instructor at Harrington. It is even more exciting to see them place among the top designs. What a wonderful affirmation of their talent and skills.”

Harrington College of Design Digital Photography Student Chosen As A Finalist For MAC-On-Campus Resource Guide
Last spring the Mac Group announced a nationwide "call for entries" for images to be used in the next MAC-On-Campus Student Resource Guide. More than 500 submissions were received and they were absolutely blown away by the quality of the images. Jessica Sladek, a digital photography student at Harrington College of Design, was included in the final edition among the 15 finalists. One of the goals of the resource guide is to show an assortment of work that other students might be interested in seeing from a variety of schools. The result is a nice blend of black, white, color, commercial, fine art, film based, and digital images reflecting many disciplines of photography today. The MAC-On-Campus Student Resource Guide acts as an asset to professional photographers and the schools and instructors that help shape them.
Harrington College of Design Digital Photography Instructor Chosen For International Silicon Sands Exhibit
Tim Arroyo, a digital photography instructor at Harrington College of Design, has been chosen as one of 37 international photographers to be featured in the Silicon Sands exhibition starting November 4 at Las Cruces Museum of Fine Arts in New Mexico. Silicon Sands is an international, juried competition open to digital imagery of any subject completed in the last year.
Arroyo was chosen for his digital composite of two photographs, which features a number of textural combinations and color enhancements. The image, called Ariel´s Submission, is intended to depict an internal struggle. Arroyo´s photo was chosen from 222 entries. This is his first museum exhibition.
“This is an exhibition I really wanted to be a part of,” says Arroyo. “Because this was an international competition, being chosen was a great honor.”
In addition to Las Cruces Museum, Arroyo´s photo also will be featured in an upcoming issue of Photo Techniques Magazine, a national photography magazine.
Harrington College of Design Students Win New Condominium Development Competition in Chicago
The Kreiter Development Group recently held a competition for their new condominium development in Chicago. Harrington College of Design students excelled in this competition as Tom Hurd placed first, Linnea Rehnk placed second and Melissa Formeister placed third. The students were given architectural plans and asked to create an interior to suit the possible inhabitant demographics of the area. Each student provided solutions for the furniture, built-ins and modifications to the initial proposed layout. Additionally, each student was asked to submit one board 20 x 30 with a plan as revised at 1/8 "=1'-0", and a generous perspective that would give the viewer the intended solution to the interior space, including furniture, built-ins if applicable, textiles and wall colors.
