HARRINGTON COLLEGE OF DESIGN RECEIVES HONORARY STREET NAME

For Immediate Release

CHICAGO, March 20, 2006 - - The city of Chicago has announced that Harrington College of Design, will receive an honorary street name on Tuesday, April 25 at 10 a.m. on the corner of Madison St. and Wells St. The street name, to be called Harrington College of Design Way, will celebrate the school’s 75th anniversary and honor its founder, Frances Harrington.

"Honorary street signs are a wonderful way for the city council to acknowledge the outstanding people and institutions, such as Harrington College of Design, to the Chicago community at-large,” says Alderman Burt Natarus. “These outstanding individuals and institutions are what make the city of Chicago great and they should be honored."

Founded in 1931 by Frances Harrington, a design educator who played a significant role in professionalizing the interior design industry, the school started as the Harrington Institute of Interior Decoration. Three decades later, the school changed its name to the Harrington Institute of Interior Design, reflecting the growing scope of interior design practices.

Now called Harrington College of Design, the institution is a mainstay of Chicago’s interior design industry, graduating 269 students per year who go on to work for top design studios, showrooms and manufacturers.

Harrington recently expanded its curricula in other areas of design, such as digital photography and communication design. "Being honored with this street name is a highlight of our 75th anniversary year,” says Erik Parks, president of Harrington College of Design. "It also is a wonderful tribute to the school’s founder, Frances Harrington, whose legacy has had a valuable impact on the city of Chicago."
